Support for nation's veterans is vital step forward

In his widely-anticipated Budget speech, Chancellor Rishi Sunak revealed a raft of measures to aid former Armed Forces personnel. We welcome the 2020 Buget announcement to provide more help for the nation's veterans

National Insurance relief will mean that those who employ veterans won't have to pay any contributions for their first year of work, saving bosses £2,000 in tax for a worker hired on a £25,000 salary.

The Chancellor will also provide an extra £10m of additional funds to support veterans with mental health needs, to be distributed by the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust.

A cause close to our hearts

Over the last 12 months alone, our military team has continued to increase its support for veterans. Prior to Christmas 2019 our support of the Walking Home for Christmas appeal, organised nationally by Walking With The Wounded, raised £6,600 – with the vast majority of that money going towards the funding of one-to-one mental wellbeing support.

Prior to that, we were honoured to earn a silver award from the Armed Forces Covenant Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) in recognition of our commitment to supporting veterans.

Veterans deserve our support

This week’s budget announcement was welcomed by James, as the work of his team continues.

“There's a growing recognition in all quarters that veterans need and deserve the help and support of both private and public organisations,” says James.

“It's our experience that a good deal of former Armed Forces personnel transition successfully and happily into civilian life. However, a number do not, and those people experience a range of issues, which can spiral if they are not supported. We should all appreciate that, and look to help whenever and however we are able. With that in mind I am sure everyone would welcome this budget announcement.”
