About Lucy

Lucy Riley is a solicitor in the dispute resolution team, based at our Grimsby office. 

Lucy has over five years of litigation experience and deals with a variety of commercial and personal disputes in areas including property, construction and building, as well as professional negligence.

In cases where court action is not avoidable, Lucy uses her skills and experience to resolve disputes by negotiation or means of alternative dispute resolution, such as mediation. 

She provides proficient advice and a strategic approach to navigate through and resolve disputes. In the event that court action is necessary, she is experienced in advocating, which allows her to achieve the best results for clients.

    Commercial disputes

    Lucy has a wealth of experience handling large claims for breach of contract and misrepresentation in commercial contracts. She is commercially minded and provides pragmatic advice to resolve disputes in the most cost and time-efficient manner.

    She acts for business of all sizes across a variety of sectors, supporting clients with shareholder and director disputes, partnership and restrictive covenant disputes.

    Professional negligence 

    Lucy regularly acts for both businesses and individuals in claims for negligence by professionals.  She regularly handles claims against a variety of professionals, from accountants and financial advisors to surveyors and solicitors.

    Being let down by a professional can come with significant financial losses. Lucy offers clear advice and a tailored approach to safeguard her clients’ best interests and successfully recover those financial losses and costs. 

    Property disputes 

    Lucy is an expert in various types of property disputes including boundary disputes, neighbour disputes, easement disputes and breach of covenant disputes, as well as proprietary estoppel claims.

    She also deals with applications under the Trust of Land and Appointment of Trustees Act 1996 (TOLATA). As part of this, she assists co-habitees in obtaining declarations of respective beneficial interests and distribution of assets. 

    She is skilled in supporting clients to take steps to resolve the matter as quickly and amicably as possible. 

    Construction and building disputes 

    Lucy has a particular interest in construction and building disputes which have arisen due to non-performance or mistakes. 

    Claims and disputes in construction and building contracts are common, as projects can be complex and have the potential for unforeseen events - often with large sums of money involved. Throughout her career, Lucy has successfully settled a number of such claims using alternative dispute resolution.

    Through her expert advice and practical approach, she aims to achieve an early resolution and will help to take preventative steps needed to avoid prolonging disagreements. 

  2. Sectors

    Military 

    Lucy has experience supporting military and veterans with property disputes and personal claims. 

    She previously assisted a client in defending a money claim in connection with a personal loan and successfully had a judgement set aside, representing the client in court at the application hearing.

  3. Education

    Lucy completed a Bachelor of Law (LLB) at the University of Hull followed by a Legal Practice Course (LPC) at the University of Law in Leeds in 2019. 

    She began her career as a litigation paralegal and then went on to complete a dispute resolution only training contract, before qualifying in 2022.
