About Liam

Liam May is a senior associate who heads up the medical negligence team based at our Grimsby office.

An expert in medical negligence, Liam advises clients on a range of cases including high value and complex brain injuries, birth-related injuries, spinal injuries and amputations.

He acts on behalf of clients bringing claims against a variety of healthcare providers - including hospital trusts, private clinicians, GPs, dentists and care homes - as well as being able to represent clients at inquests at the Coroner’s Court.

He also specialises in military medical negligence, representing service personnel and veterans.

  1. Key specialisms

    Amputations

Undergoing an amputation as a result of medical negligence is life changing for our clients and their families, and the impact can be both overwhelming and long lasting.

Amputations result in significant lifestyle changes which are not only physically and emotionally challenging, but can also have a financial impact, as clients often face rising costs of adaptations and care, as well as loss of employment.

In his role, Liam seeks to alleviate these financial challenges by recovering compensation that can support clients in a variety of ways. This can include access to private care and rehabilitation, the cost of prosthetic limbs, psychological support, loss of earnings, the provision of care and adaptations around the home.

    Inquests

Inquests can be extremely emotional experiences and the process of being involved in one can be quite daunting. Liam supports clients through this difficult time by providing advice and guidance throughout the process as a trusted partner.

He works closely with the Coroner’s Court and other third parties to assist in the preparation of the court bundle, as well as representing families at pre-inquest review hearings and final inquest hearings.

  2. Sectors

    Military

Liam regularly represents active service personnel, their families and veterans in medical negligence claims against the Ministry of Defence.

From his experience, he understands how injuries can impact career progression in the armed forces, particularly to those who have been medically downgraded or discharged. He supports clients by seeking to recover loss of income and loss of pension contributions, amongst other expenses.

  3. Education

Liam completed a Bachelor of Law (LLB) at Northumbria University before qualifying in Lincolnshire in September 2011.

  4. Voluntary work and memberships

Liam volunteers his time to run a pro-bono monthly drop-in clinic at the Knoll in Cleethorpes, for veterans who wish to obtain legal advice.

In addition, he regularly attends military events in Lincolnshire and represents Wilkin Chapman at the North East Lincolnshire Armed Forces Liaison Group, which works with local partners to promote the Armed Forces Covenant in Grimsby and Cleethorpes.

He is also a member of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers - a not-for-profit organisation committed to injured people.

Liam also sits as a Chair of Governors at a local Primary School.
