Wilkin Chapman ranked within top 115 UK law firms
Wilkin Chapman LLP, now sits just outside the top 100 UK law firms, after being ranked as 111th in the country by the Lawyer UK 200 - a leap of 15 places on last year’s ranking.
As the largest law firm in Lincolnshire and East Yorkshire, this firmly places the practice amongst some of the UK’s most successful law firms.
The Lawyer UK 200 is well respected within the legal sector and each year undertakes a survey of around 300 UK-based law firms. The survey covers turnover, number of partners, practice areas and financial information; the results of which make up the list for the top 200 UK law firms by turnover.
Julia Whittaker, chief executive of Wilkin Chapman, said: “This fantastic new ranking within The Lawyer UK 200 reflects the hard work and commitment of all our staff, as well as the successful growth of the business. The amount and variety of instructions that we are receiving from clients reflects the expansion of the range of our services as well as our depth of expertise whilst offering value for money. The Lawyer article comments on our growth in turnover by 30.5% over the past four years as well as the increased number of qualified lawyers which has risen to 88.”
In addition to the UK 200, the law firm has received further accolades and recognition from another of the UK’s prominent legal guides. The firm has received six individual lawyer rankings and four practice recommendations within the influential Chambers 2015 guide.
The Chambers UK 2015 guide identifies and ranks the country’s top law firms and solicitors by region and city. To gain a listing in the guide, both firms and individuals must be recommended during Chambers’ rigorous interview and research process, which is conducted by a team of over 140 full-time researchers.
Wilkin Chapman received four practice area recommendations, and is also noted as a ‘recognised practitioner’ in agriculture and rural affairs within the Yorkshire region. Within the Lincoln and surrounds region, the agriculture and corporate & commercial teams are recommended in the agricultural & rural affairs and corporate/mergers & acquisitions categories respectively, and the wills, trusts and probate team is recognised in the private client category, whilst the commercial property team is ranked in the real estate category.
Several of the firm’s partners have also been ranked, and recognised, as exceptional individuals – a testament to their legal expertise and knowledge. Ruth Brewin, partner and head of commercial property, is recognised as a ‘band ‘1 solicitor, which means that she is recognised as being a top lawyer in her field; she is highlighted as being a “fantastic” practitioner who is particularly noted for her estates and non-profit work. Martyn Chilvers, partner, is recognised as a band 2 solicitor and is commended by clients for his ability to “deal with complex subjects, identify the difficult areas and resolve them.” Both are featured in the real estate category within the Lincoln and surrounds region.
Within the private client category for Lincolnshire and surrounds, Lisa-Jane Howes, partner and head of wills, trusts and probate, is also ranked as a ‘band 1’ solicitor. Clients describe her as “consistently cheerful and helpful” and also add that “communicating with her is always easy”.
Russell Eke, partner and head of corporate and commercial department, is recognised as a ‘band 1’ solicitor within the Corporate/M&A category within Lincoln and surrounds. During the research process, interviewees stated that he “stands out above the rest” and that “he is very level headed.”
David Buckle, partner and head of litigation, has also been highlighted as being a ‘recognised practitioner’ in employment law for the Sheffield and surrounds region.
In addition to recognition for individual partners, the firm has received several ringing endorsements for its services. The wills, trusts and probate team has been recommended by clients as having a “considerable pool of talent”, and is also recognised for its extensive estate planning capabilities and considerable experience of acting for agricultural clients, as well as lottery winners.
The commercial property team is highlighted for its expertise in commercial and development work, and specialist knowledge in the renewable energy sector; with clients commenting that “the lawyers are accessible, have got a broad span of knowledge and never let me down” and that the team has “a good understanding of our business and give good, pragmatic advice.”
In the category of agricultural & rural affairs, clients say: “the team is responsive, gives commercial advice and charges sensible fees.” Within the corporate/mergers & acquisitions category the firm is recognised for its full service corporate and commercial practice, active across Lincolnshire and East Yorkshire, with clients reflecting that: “every single one of them has been superb.”
Commenting on these latest recommendations, Mark Carlton, Senior Partner said: “As a firm, we pride ourselves on providing first class and affordable legal advice for clients within our region and beyond, and it is heartening to see this reflected in our rankings.
“This year has seen a large number of legal recommendations for both the firm and individual lawyers, which serves as testament to the hard work of our specialist solicitors.”
