Wilkin Chapman appoints a specialist immigration solicitor to meet growing demand

A specialist immigration solicitor has joined the ranks of the region’s largest law firm as it establishes a bespoke service for a wide range of private and business clients.

Calum Hanrahan, a Lincoln-educated professional, is based at the city’s office of Wilkin Chapman solicitors, but is available to work with clients across the firm’s six other offices in Grimsby, Beverley, Louth, Alford, Horncastle and Sheffield.

“As my career has progressed, I have developed a real passion for this area of legal work. As I am settled in the county, I am delighted to have the opportunity to specialise, especially in Lincolnshire and East Yorkshire,” said Calum.

Following his undergraduate law degree, Calum obtained a Masters’ degree in Sports Law, with the ambition to go into sports agency work. However, after a spell in the retail environment, he settled on general law and began his career as a Paralegal, before taking the CILEx route into the profession. The Chartered Institute of Legal Executives, (CILEx) operates a training programme for professionals who are at various stages in their legal careers.

After developing his interest in specialist immigration work, he is looking forward to a busy time - with Brexit just a year away and a growing number of clients looking at the challenges and opportunities involving immigration.

“As has been well reported, the regulations regarding the continued residence in the UK of nationals from members of the European Economic Area are likely to change. However, there is action that people can take now if, for example, they are a qualified person or, even better, they are a qualified person who has resided here for five years,” said Calum.

Other issues include non-European Economic Area workers being sponsored by employers, general visa requirements and settled UK residents wishing to apply for their married or unmarried International partners to live with them in the UK.

“It is a diverse area of law, and the outcomes can be incredibly rewarding – from assisting a business in sponsoring a valued employee from outside the European Economic Area, to ensuring a happy ending for a UK resident who wishes to spend their life in the UK with a partner of a different nationality,” added Calum.
