Parental leave for parents' parents

The Government has confirmed that grandparents will be able to share their children’s parental leave. It’s a measure aimed at injecting more flexibility and choice into time off to care for children.

But we’ll have to wait a little while before this becomes a reality. Parental leave for grandparents is planned to come into force by 2018 – which could well mean ‘in 2018’. Consultation will begin in the first half of 2016, and we’ll get a better idea of what the detail of all this will be after then.

One other significant point to note from the Chancellor’s announcement is that only working grandparents stand to benefit from these extended rights.
